When most people think about beach destinations in Thailand, places like Koh Samui, Phuket, or Krabi usually come to mind first.
They’re beautiful but they’re also busy, developed, and touristy.
During our travels through southern Thailand the second time we decided to skip the busier islands. We headed to Khao Lak instead a much quieter, more relaxed coastal area and we stayed at Poseidon Bungalows.
It turned out to be one of the most peaceful and genuinely relaxing parts of our Thailand trip.
Why Visit Khao Lak Instead of the Islands?
Khao Lak is often overlooked because it’s not an island and doesn’t have the party reputation of places like Koh Samui or Phuket.
But that’s exactly why it’s so appealing especially for families or slower travelers.
Khao Lak offers:
- long, quiet beaches
- fewer crowds
- a calmer, more local feel
- easier logistics (no ferries needed)
- excellent access to nature and national parks
If you want beautiful beaches without the chaos, Khao Lak is a fantastic alternative.
Where Is Poseidon Bungalows Located?
Poseidon Bungalows is located right in Khao Lak, close to the beach and surrounded by greenery.
The location works perfectly because:
- you can walk to the beach
- restaurants and shops are nearby
- the area is peaceful and quiet
- everything feels spread out and relaxed
It’s the kind of place where days naturally slow down. Think massages on the beach (if you want to escape the kids for a while, ha!) Beach restaurants, swings on the beach and general tranquility.
The Bungalows & Accommodation Style
Accommodation at Poseidon Bungalows is simple and practical rather than luxury-focused.
The bungalows offer:
- comfortable beds
- private bathrooms
- outdoor seating areas
- a relaxed, beachy feel
- a pool
This is not a place for marble bathrooms and infinity pools but it is perfect if you value:
- location
- calm
- simplicity
- and a good night’s sleep near the sea
Honestly, I absolutely loved waking up on the beach. We did also encounter a downpour of rain whilst we were there and there were umbrellas dotted around for guests too which is a nice extra touch.
Is Poseidon Bungalows Good for Families?
Yes, especially for families who:
- prefer quieter destinations
- don’t need resort entertainment
- want space, calm, and freedom
Khao Lak itself is very family-friendly:
- calm beaches
- relaxed restaurants
- safe, walkable areas
- no party scene
It’s a great place to actually rest rather than constantly plan activities.
Khao Lak vs Koh Samui (And Other Popular Beaches)
Here’s the honest comparison:
Choose Koh Samui if:
- you want nightlife
- lots of organised tours
- big resorts and shopping
- a busy, energetic atmosphere
Choose Khao Lak if:
- you want quiet beaches
- space and calm
- fewer crowds
- slower travel days
- a more “real” and relaxed feel
For us, Khao Lak was exactly what we needed after more intense travel days. We also find when going to places like Koh Samui prices are higher for tourists etc and it doesn’t have an authentic Thai feel.
What You Can Do in Khao Lak
Khao Lak is all about simple pleasures and nature:
- long beach walks
- swimming and relaxing
- nearby national parks
- snorkelling and boat trips
- day trips to places like the Similan Islands
But it’s also a place where doing nothing feels completely justified.
How Khao Lak Fit Into Our Thailand Route
We visited Khao Lak after spending time in more active parts of Thailand and after hiking adventures in Khao Sok National Park.
It worked perfectly as:
- a rest stop
- a slow beach break
- a reset before we then moved onto the craziness of Mumbai – that was a wild adventure you can read about here: Family Travel In India – The Crazy World Of Mumbai
This balance between beach, nature, and travel days made the whole trip much more enjoyable especially with kids.
Is Poseidon Bungalows Worth It?
For us, yes.
If you’re looking for:
- a simple, affordable place to stay
- close to the beach
- in a quiet, relaxed part of Thailand
Poseidon Bungalows is a great fit.
It matched Khao Lak’s vibe perfectly calm, easygoing, and unpretentious.
