If you have ever thought about encouraging your child/ren to learn another language such as Spanish it is likely you have turned to that little green owl with the grin – you know the one. Duo. It seems all fun and games when you start and that’s because it literally is. You see all the green ticks and you think excellent, my child is actually learning another language. Then someone speaks to them in Spanish. There is a blank vacant expression as they literally have zero idea what they have said. It is at that point you realise, spending a year with that fuzzy green owl has not achieved much of anything.
For language to be learned, it needs to feel real rather than academic. Of course, that isn’t always the easiest for everyone. We have been fortunate enough to travel around some amazing Spanish speaking countries, one of our favourites being Costa Rica which you can read all about here: Costa Rica with Kids: A Real Itinerary You Can Copy However, even without travelling to other countries, you can still feel immersed. That’s where Kelly comes in and her colourful companion Tico the toucan!”

Meet Kelly and Tico! Adventures in Spanish brings that immersion feeling to you. Conversational, cultural, real. Not grammar drills actual Spanish for actual life. There is a class for everyone with Kelly; for home educated children, private classes, classes designed for your holidays and even adult classes.
Immersion works because when you learn language through experience rather than repetition it sticks differently. Your brain files it under real memory not textbook memory. These memories can be created in conversation with a real person, of perhaps even with other children in the class.

Of course, we can take immersion one step further in the form of trips. You remember the word for waterfall because you stood next to one asking what it was called. Kelly has built this for us too in the form of trips from Spain to Patagonia. Arranged with other worldschooling and home educating families. An experience not to be missed out on, it will live in your families stories for years to come.
Myself and my eldest have always been a little more advanced in our Spanish than my youngest and it has been hard to involve him as he has had a natural wall up, feeling behind. Both of my boys prefer learning together and so this style of learning is perfect for them. I can’t wait to see my youngest speaking Spanish as confidently as his brother on our next trip – maybe we will see you there on an immersion trip 😉
